Pizzi Cannella works with cryptic signs, symbols and spaces of memory. His paintings tend to be borne of a calm, almost meditative visual language, in which everyday motifs, fragments of the body and cultural symbols converge into compositions that are legible and enigmatic in equal measure, such as the paintings of garments, chandeliers and vases shown in this exhibition.

The first thing that catches the eye in the work Rosso Pozzuoli is the vivid red of the dress; it glows as it emerges from an almost black background, like a signal emanating from darkness. There is no body, no chair, no setting, just the dress, floating in the pictorial space. The work feels like a memory that suddenly materialises, something alive, yet absent. The red stands for intensity, for presence, and the dark background for that which can no longer be seen but lingers in our memory. Here, Pizzi Cannella is not simply showing us a piece of clothing, but a dress as a memento of a person who remains invisible and can only be imagined

Presented in Room 2 are paintings from his series Salon de Musique, a series of large-format black paintings with grand chandeliers that charge the space they inhabit with an intense atmosphere oscillating between elegance, absence and memory. To conclude, in Room 5 upstairs, we present Pizzi Cannella’s paintings featuring vases. Here, too, the works resonate with elusive fragments of half-told stories that haunt the space between the visible and the remembered.
